Kelsey Scott

Sudden cardiac arrest is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States for student-athletes during exercise. Caused by a structural or electrical problem associated with the heart, sudden cardiac arrest happens when the heart unexpectedly stops beating and pumping blood.

In association with Harborview Medical Center at the University of Washington, this course will help you learn and recognize the warning signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest, steps to using a AED and emergency management steps.

By the end of this chapter, you will learn:

  1. The role of preseason physical and cardiac screening.
  2. The critical importance of on-location and accessible AEDs.
  3. How to plan and practice an Emergency Action Plan.
  4. The American Heart Association’s “Chain of Survival.”
